The disappointment is readily available when a gray-haired November day has set itself on a colorful experience, which is believed to be the last escapades of “Ratchet & Clank”, but gets something completely different instead.
Little is better balm for the soul than a charming adventure, the guy signed the big fur-lined ears and his robot mate.
There’s almost an inner calm over me when I’m sitting with the controller and it feels like my motor is directly connected to the game. Because it suddenly strikes me how unique these games are on the control system. Everything feels intuitive and it feels like coming home.
But when the scroll text rolls in after about five to six hours, I’m disappointed and wondering what Insomniac Games has been going for.
This is not the platform adventure I wanted – it’s not even a game they should have made.
Instead of creating a new game in good style, as we know them, they have boasted an “innovative” turnaround in the series. In fact, they have created a tower defense game mixed with the platform elements we know.
Now I’m a big supporter of tower defense, and the idea is not quite past night. It may remind you of ” Trenched “, where you also control a figure that sets up the cannon tower and can even shoot.
But when the outcome is like a 16-year-old identity crisis, the compromises at both ends will be too much to bear. It does not help that the whole game gives a sense of being left-handed.
Hold the fort
Each mission involves protecting a main base, but where you have to go out into the environment to ensure the financing of the toes to protect it. You also need to pick up new weapons to help keep the fort.
Once you’ve managed to juggle the defensive tasks with the offensive in an efficient way, you’ve hopefully managed to save the base. However, once you have completed an assignment, you will have to start almost completely when you start the next board.
You must find your weapons over and over again with the same strategy to protect the base. The only thing you take with you is the progress you achieve by using weapons. But even this mechanics never gets time to flourish – the game is done before it gets an interesting dimension.
A game with just two tricks
The whole game only takes two stages: to fly out of the base to ensure progress, and then get back to secure it at certain times.
It is also not possible to upgrade the towers you build – you can replace them with other types, but they will never get better, which is almost essential in good tower defense games.
The variation is also an ears without pulse – each base is completely similar and the enemies come from the same two input each time. Therefore, only the surroundings outside the bases distinguishes one mission from the other.
The total product gives the impression that Insomniac Games really only gave up halfway in development and decided to nevertheless release the game. Admittedly, it’s a cheaper game, but either buy ” Ratchet & Clank: Tools of Destruction ” or ” Ratchet & Clank: A Crack in Time ” if you absolutely need a little “Ratchet & Clank”.
The control system and shooting feel are as unique as it has been long, but this does not work well as neither tower defense games nor platform action. It is too underdeveloped in both ends.
«Ratchet & Clank: Qforce» will be released to PlayStation 3 on November 30th. The PlayStation Vita version will be released in the New Year.
